Hi there darlings!
I caught the pilot of ”Reign” and it very much met the CW formula: pretty people + popular music + great clothes= TV show. Not that I’m at all complaining! As you may have been able to tell I’m definitely one for a few guilty pleasures and I think this show is shaping up to be a worthy addition to my list. Plus dears I’m a sucker for historical pieces, and though I’m sure this show won’t ever argue for perfect historical accuracy, a little artistic license never hurt anyone, unless of course you’re basing your history paper on it! Though I think it’s safe to say that a CW show is never what you should base your history paper on…
Anyway loves, “Reign” follows 15 year old Mary Queen of Scots as she arrives at the French Court. It feels very reminiscent of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette- showing a young future queen struggling with her role as both royal and teenager. Throw in some stilettos, which definitely were not worn during the Renaissance (if you remember Marie Antoinette was outfitted in pink Converse in the film) and a soundtrack with artists like the Lumineers, and you have a recipe for an entertaining pop culture piece. Though this show already seems to be going in a darker direction- they don’t shy away from the gruesome or macabre. Yes Marie Antoinette was beheaded but Sofia Coppola didn’t show it….
As I often do, I found inspiration from the clothing. Mary and her ladies in waiting wear gorgeous gowns and crystal headpieces, While the pastel colors of some of the dresses probably wouldn’t have existed (remember they didn’t have modern chemical dye), nor would some of the strapless cuts, they’re still quite lovely to look at. As are some other things on the show
So let’s take a look at some of the wardrobe now shall we?
Couldn’t we all use a good cape? Be it dark velvet, pink with a fur trim, or a simple ivory silhouette, there’s a cape for every gal! And don’t forget the braids and crystal hedpieces. A girl simply can’t leave home without being fully accessorized.
Here are a few pieces to get you started on your royal look:
Any royal would look simply lovely in this rich colored cape. Though hopefully you have a royal budget to go along with it…
Or perhaps you’re feeling a bit more low key a la a lady in waiting? Then you’ll love this pretty pink coat!
Or maybe this neutral cardi is more your style?
Then simply adorn your head
Try this dainty piece
Or go full on Mary with this dramatic crown headpiece.
And there you go! In an outfit fit for a queen you’ll be ready for whatever potential situation comes your way!
